Job Purpose The Commissioning Engineer is responsible for executing, and completing the commissioning of HV substations to ensure that all primary and secondary systems are installed, tested, and energised safely, in accordance with project specifications, statutory regulations, and client requirements. Key Responsibilities Commissioning Execution Plan and carry out interface commissioning activities for transformers, switchgear, protection, control, and auxiliary systems. Execute commissioning in accordance with approved Commissioning Strategies, Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs), and Method Statements. Coordinate commissioning activities across construction, protection, control, SCADA, and client teams to achieve safe energisation milestones. Primary Equipment Commissioning HV and MV equipment interface commissioning including: Power transformers and auxiliary transformers HV/MV switchgear (AIS, GIS) Circuit breakers, disconnectors, earth switches Current transformers (CTs) and voltage transformers (VTs) Perform functional and operational checks prior to energisation. Protection, Control & SCADA Carry out testing and commissioning of protection and control schemes, including: Differential, distance, overcurrent, busbar, and transformer protection Inter-tripping, interlocking, alarms, and indications Perform secondary and primary injection testing using approved test equipment. Verify SCADA, remote control, and IEC61850 communication where applicable. Safety and Compliance Carry out all commissioning activities in strict compliance with: Client and company's Safety Rules and EHS procedures Approved method statements and risk assessments Maintain safe systems of work when interfacing with live or adjacent HV plant. Stop work and escalate any unsafe conditions, noncompliances, or protection anomalies. Documentation & Quality Produce, review, and sign off protection test records, relay settings verification sheets, and commissioning certificates. Ensure test results comply with approved Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs). Support resolution and closure of commissioning defects and punchlist items. Contribute to asbuilt documentation and handover packs. Interface & Support Work closely with: Lead Commissioning Engineer Site Manager Client commissioning teams Support commissioning panels, energisation reviews, and outage planning activities. Provide technical input during fault investigations or commissioning issues. Authorisations CAT-1 for non-energised SSEN stations and CAT-3 for energised SSEN stations NGP for non-energised NG stations and NGCP for energised NG stations CCNSG or equivalent ticket Typical Work Environment HV substations during construction, outage, and commissioning phases. Sitebased testing, and commissioning activities. 10 hours/day with 6 days/week and 11 days/fortnight rotations for onshore stations. 12 hours/day, 14 days rotation for offshore stations.
