Non-IT Resume Format and Template — B.Com, BBA, MBA, and More

Most resume advice online assumes you’re a software engineer applying to a tech startup. The truth is, more than half of Indian freshers graduate from non-IT streams — B.Com, BBA, BA, B.Sc, MBA — and the resume format that works for a Python developer doesn’t always work for an accountant or marketing executive.

Here’s a resume template tailored for non-IT freshers, with the section order, content, and language that recruiters in commerce, business, and operations actually look for.

The Right Section Order

For non-IT freshers, the section order is slightly different from the engineering resume:

  1. Header + Contact (name, phone, email, city, LinkedIn)
  2. Career Objective (2-3 lines, role-specific)
  3. Education (this is your strongest card as a fresher)
  4. Internships / Work Experience (if any)
  5. Projects (academic, research, or case-study)
  6. Certifications & Courses (Tally, GST, Excel, NPTEL, Coursera)
  7. Skills (with the JD keywords)
  8. Achievements & Extracurriculars (positions of responsibility)
  9. Languages (spoken, written)

Move “Skills” lower and put “Certifications” higher than you would on a software resume. Certifications matter more for non-IT because they signal practical readiness.

What to Put in the Career Objective (Non-IT)

Two or three lines that name:

  • Your degree and specialisation
  • The most relevant skill or certification
  • The specific role you’re targeting

Bad: “Hardworking MBA graduate looking for opportunities in a reputed organization to apply my skills.”

Good: “MBA (Marketing) graduate with 6 months of internship experience in digital marketing and brand strategy. Targeting Marketing Executive roles in B2C companies where I can grow into a brand manager.”

The first one is generic. The second one tells the recruiter exactly what you can do and what you want.

What to Highlight for Non-IT Roles

RoleTop 3 things recruiters look for
AccountantTally / Excel / GST knowledge, internships, accuracy
Marketing ExecutiveInternships, campaigns, content samples, Google/Meta certs
HR ExecutiveInternships, recruitment exposure, knowledge of labour basics
Sales ExecutiveInternship numbers (₹ sold, leads converted), communication
Business AnalystExcel, SQL, internship, case-study projects
MBA GeneralInternship brand names, projects, leadership roles, certifications

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Listing every college subject as a “skill”. Auditing, taxation, and cost accounting are degree topics, not separate skills. Put them under “Education” or “Coursework”.
  • Skipping internships because they were short. A 2-month internship is more useful than an extra bullet of skills. Always include it.
  • Writing “Fresher” as a job title. Your title is what you did — Marketing Intern, Accounts Intern, Sales Trainee.
  • Ignoring the languages section. For non-IT roles, especially in tier-2 cities, recruiters actively screen for Hindi, regional, and English fluency.

Non-IT resumes are not weaker than IT resumes — they’re just different. The recruiters know what they want to see. The format above gives them exactly that, in the order they expect.
